Maria Massaad

In her surreal, charged oil paintings, Maria Massaad (Lebanon, 1999) tends to unacknowledged wounds, rendering the inner world through intertwined vessels that guide the viewer from one scene to another, like veins or roots circulating life between organs. Having lived ten years in Spain, she returned to her roots in Lebanon a year ago. In a world where silence, denial, or escapism prevail, Massaad treats painting as a route to the wound, a form of dissection. Her biomorphic forms and unsettling landscapes create a terrain—psychological, spiritual, and real—where boundaries dissolve, allowing truth to emerge as a whisper or scream.

AiR Cohort July 2026

For three weeks, last july, eight artists from Senegal, Rwanda, Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco shared time, land and attention in the Tunisian countryside at Tilal Utique.

Working mostly in visual art, alongside music, they made the residency a space where image and sound met, listened to one another and moved across their boundaries.

Rooted in the landscape and its rhythms, it proposed slowness as a method and encounter as a form of knowledge, opening shared ground for new ways of seeing, hearing and making.
